The Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) is Austria's largest research and educational institution in the field of technology and natural sciences. More than 4,000 scientists are researching "technology for people" at eight faculties. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology contributes to solving the challenges of the future with scientific excellence in research and teaching, imparts methodological knowledge and detailed technical knowledge to students, develops successful innovations in research collaborations with industry and provides well-founded scientific facts for social discussion and decision-making processes. The research areas for energy systems and energy economics develop practical solutions for the specific challenges of the energy transition towards 100% renewable energy based on the latest scientific and technological knowledge.

As independent transmission system operator Austrian Power Grid (APG) is in charge of ensuring the security of electricity supply in Austria. With our high-performance and digital electricity infrastructure and the use of state-of-the-art technologies we integrate renewable energies, we are the platform for the electricity market, we provide access to reasonably priced electricity for Austria’s consumers and thus create the basis for Austria as industrial and business location and place to live which benefits form the security of electricity supply and is fit for the future. The APG grid totals a length of about 3,500 km and is operated, maintained and continuously adapted to the increasing challenges of the electrification of businesses, industry and society by a team of approximately 900 specialists. 67 substations are distributed all over Austria and the majority is operated remotely from APG’s control center in Vienna’s 10th district. Also in 2022 Austria had a security of supply of 99.99 percent and thus ranks among the top countries worldwide. Our investments of 445 million euros in 2024 (2023: 490 million euros; 2022: 370 million euros) are a motor for the Austrian economy and a crucial factor in reaching Austria’s climate and energy targets. Until 2034 APG will invest a total of approximately 9 billion euros in grid expansion and renovation projects.

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) is Austria’s largest research and technology organisation with more than 1.500 employees at present working on the key infrastructure issues of the future. AIT focuses on the two interlinked research priorities of ‘sustainable and resilient infrastructures’, particularly in the areas of energy, transport and health, and the ‘digital transformation of industry and society’, working closely with industry and clients from public institutions.
